Expatriates

Welcome to Papua New Guinea.

We are glad that you are considering to contribute your engineering knowledge and practice it in Papua New Guinea. The country needs you and we truly appreciate that you are willing to support the building of the country in terms of your expertise and training where required.

However, prior to entering the country to work as an engineer or doing any engineering related work, it is required by the Professional Engineers Registration Act (Amended) 2007 to be registered under the Professional Engineers Registration Board and apply for membership with the Institution of Engineers Papua New Guinea Incorporated (IEPNG). The Competency Based Assessment (CBA) is used to assess all professional engineers and non-engineers such as Graduates, Companions and Technicians for IEPNG membership.

Below is a brief outline of what is required from you to enter and work in Papua New Guinea:

  1. Apply for membership with IEPNG and registration online
  2. Provide all supporting documentation as required
  3. On completion of your application forms, a support letter to the Department of Labour and Industrial Relations (DLIR) – Foreign Employment will be provided to you for work permit processing
  4. Once work permit is processed, you are good to do professional engineering works 

Note: Membership under the CBA is for 3 years after a member is required to renew membership. Your membership with IEPNG is based on your work permit period. Once your work permit expires, you will be required to go through the whole process again by reapplying.

Applying for Membership

To apply for Membership, please go to Join and follow the process. However, for your information, below are documents that you will need for your application:

Engineers

  • Certified copies of academic qualification
  • Certified complete and official academic transcripts
  • Certified professional membership certificate or letter from your country of origin to confirm that you are registered with or anywhere else
  • IELTS, TOEFLiBT or PTE Academic (English qualification)
  • Official English translation of above documents where applicable
  • A recent passport size photo (35mmx45mm)
  • Prime Identification document (current passport includes photo and name)
  • An updated Curriculum Vitae/Resume
  • CBA Forms: CA01, CA03, CA04, CA05, CA06 and two (2) written detailed work samples as required to answer performance indicator elements/standards on form CA03

Technicians

  • Certified copies of certificate or diploma qualification from a College or Technical School
  • Certified complete and official academic transcripts
  • Certified professional membership certificate or letter from your country of origin to confirm that you are Member of or anywhere else
  • IELTS, TOEFLiBT or PTE Academic (English qualification)
  • Official English translation of above documents where applicable
  • A recent passport size photo (35mmx45mm)
  • Prime Identification document (current passport includes photo and name)
  • An updated Curriculum Vitae/Resume 
  • CBA Forms: CA01, CA04 and CA05. Work history summary and CPD undertaken in the last 3 years only
